SSS Essex Ltd was visited by inspectors from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) last month.
The franchise runs activity camps and after-school sports care programs from a number of schools in the borough.
The FSA makes its reports based on practices and systems observed at the time of inspection, focusing on three main categories.
These include hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, and the management of food safety.
The handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage by SSS Essex Ltd was reported to be “generally satisfactory”.
Inspectors found the franchise’s management of food safety relating to systems in place to ensure food safety, and evidence of staff’s knowledge of this, was found to be in need of “major improvement”.
The cleanliness of the venue was also reported to require improvement.
SSS Essex Director Jack Golding said: “We take the safety and wellbeing of the children in our care extremely seriously.
“Although our team only handles and serves food between 4–4.30pm, the inspection unfortunately took place after 5pm when no food handling was taking place.

“This meant the inspector was unable to see our food service in action or the full procedures we follow daily.”
The franchise claims it set out to take immediate action after the inspection to address the feedback and has “already put additional measures in place to ensure we exceed expectations”.
Mr Golding added: “We are confident that, if reinspected today, a significantly higher score would be awarded. We have formally requested a reinspection and look forward to receiving an updated score in due course.“
