The incident happened yesterday (April 14) around 3.30pm by Leyton Fire Station, at the junction of Church Road and Oliver Road.
His injuries are not life-threatening or changing, but he remains in hospital after being treated by ambulance and air ambulance paramedics.
There have been no arrests and the junction of Church Road and Oliver Road reopened around 7.45pm last night, but enquiries continue.
Kumar owns a shop right by the police cordon. He said: “People are scared. I am also sometimes scared, when these kind of things [happen].
“These kind of things – stabbings – are normal in this area.”
Claire, a mum from the area said: “My son is 18, my youngest. And if he is not in the time that he is going to be, I am on the phone.
“Where are you? I need to know. Because nobody is going to be knocking my door.
“It is getting from bad to worse. They have closed down all these facilities for these children. So that is what they do. They cause problems.
“What have they put in there for these children to go and release their frustration? Nothing. So they are doing it on the streets. They are doing it outside your door.”
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “On Monday, 14 April police were called at 15:29hrs to Church Road, Leyton following reports of a stabbing.
“Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service who treated a man in his 50s for stab wounds before taking him to hospital.
“We await an update on his condition. At this early stage, there have been no arrests.
“A crime scene is currently in place as well as road closures. Enquiries are on-going.”
A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 3.27pm today (14 April) to reports of a stabbing at the junction of Church Road and Oliver Road, Leyton.
“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, a clinical team manager and a paramedic from our tactical response unit.
“We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
“We treated a man at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre.”
