Becket Keys Church of England Free School, in Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood, has been rated ‘outstanding’ in all grading areas after its most recent Ofsted inspection.
This is the school’s first inspection since 2014 and follows the new grading system introduced by Ofsted in September 2024, which does not include an overall effectiveness judgement.
In its Ofsted report published on April 1, Becket Keys is described by inspectors as a school where pupils “flourish academically, socially, and spiritually”.

The inspection team, led by lead inspector Bessie Owen, said in the report: “Strong relationships with staff, and excellent pastoral support, mean that pupils feel valued and well looked after.
“Teachers have high expectations, and pupils rise to meet them.
“As a result, they develop a love of learning, achieve highly, and leave the school ready for their next steps.”

Pupils’ “exemplary” behaviour is underpinned by the school’s Christian ethos, according to Ofsted, which encourages the 1,142 students at the school to treat each other with “care and respect”.

Lessons were found to be “calm” and “free from disruption” by the inspectors, while the the school quickly identifies and supports those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
The Ofsted report details that Becket Keys’ curriculum is “carefully designed” and “ambitious”.
This includes the opportunity to study a modern foreign language at Key Stage 4 and “excellent support” for pupils to develop their reading and vocabulary.

An insight into the “clear and precise” teaching at the school is also given in the report.
“Every lesson begins with a ‘do now’ activity, which reinforces key knowledge and deepens pupils’ understanding over time,” the inspection team said.
“Teachers use questioning with precision, checking pupils’ understanding and extending their thinking.”

Outside of the curriculum, pupils can join clubs such as rugby, tabletop battle games and Christian Union, as well as having the chance to “broaden their cultural experiences” through school trips to places including China and Seville.
Headteacher Andy Scott-Evans said the school is “delighted” with the inspection results.
He told the Recorder: “This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, pupils, and the wider school community.
“We will continue to strive for excellence in all areas and provide our pupils with the best possible education and opportunities.”
Rt Revd Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, Bishop of Chelmsford, added: “To be awarded an ‘outstanding’ grade in every category of the inspection is truly exceptional.
“It was a particular joy to read the comments that accompanied the inspection report, which demonstrate the strong relationships between staff and students, and the pastoral support offered by the school, all underpinned by the Christian ethos.”
