Throughout April and beyond, guided walks, ‘Library Lates’ events, and an interactive art trail are among the activities planned to commemorate the occasion.
Various groups and partners are encouraged to organise their own events to join the commemorative programme.
Residents are also welcome to participate in several Bromley 60th birthday parties being held at the borough’s libraries.
On March 29, the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor David Jefferys, will kick off the 60th anniversary celebrations by joining an interactive art trail across Bromley town centre.
This event has been organised by Quest Soul Theatre.
Councillor Jefferys said: “I am so delighted to share this special programme with residents and hope to see many of you throughout these events, as we celebrate our borough in this milestone year of our history.
“I thank the partners and resident groups who have already contributed to this wide-ranging programme and encourage others to come forward and share their plans, so we can continue to share activities throughout the year and give even more residents the opportunity to come together.”
As part of the Broom Day celebrations, the mayor will also lead a walk from an exhibition in The Glades to St Martin’s Hill to view the Broom flower in full bloom.
This event, hosted by the Bromley Civic Society, will take place on May 3.
Schools are invited to join the celebrations by potentially holding a ‘1965 day’, where students can dress in clothing from the time and learn about life when Bromley was formed.
A children’s art competition is also being held for schools, where students are invited to design an A4 60th birthday card or cake for Bromley.
Following the mayor’s boundary walking challenge, five town centre walks will soon be shared with residents, including through the council website.
These walks will celebrate the borough’s history by linking the five town halls of the district and urban councils that came together in April 1965 to form the London Borough of Bromley, with a further walk being made available in Biggin Hill to allow residents in the south of the borough to get involved.
