The venue has been smartly redecorated with innumerable screens playing every sport you could name, and some you could not, and a brand new menu.
A very extensive menu. I counted 65 choices, making this a tough place for the indecisive. The kilo of chicken wings arrived – and then another (Image: Newsquest)
Burgers, salads, pizza, wraps, pub classics, a selection of mac’n’cheeses with even more customisable options. If you want it, The Temperance seemed to sell it.
After much deliberation, we opted for dough balls, sweetcorn ribs, a burger with blue cheese and a kilos of wings.(Image: Stonegate)
While we waited we watched a man be knocked out in a boxing match on one of the screens that is fitted in every booth, while all around us screens played on the walls.
The screens are interspersed with pictures of huge bugs holding balls which adds a surreal effect to the redecoration.
The pub reopened in January after a “six-figure investment” by owners Stonegate.
It aims to be “a welcoming space for sports teams, social societies and guests looking for an unforgettable night out”, helped by drinks from £4 and two increasingly rare pool tables.(Image: Temperance)
With a roster of events planned including quizzes and open mic events this is not a place where you will be bored while waiting for your food.
As you would imagine from the menu the drink selection is extensive and delivered by really friendly staff who genuinely seemed to want to make us comfortable.(Image: Temperance)
While we sipped our beers we wondered what the inspiration was behind the bugs.
The food here is straightforward and generous. The burger was big, dough balls cheesy, all you could want from a sports bar.
But the highlight was the wings and I would recommend to any visitor to keep it simple and get a kilo.
There are not many times you get to order your food by the kilo, nor when it will be so satisfying.
You can choose from five sauces – BBQ, Korean BBQ, garlic, herb or inferno, which we were warned against.
The Temperance is fun, and if you are looking for a place to watch a big game with plenty of food, it has the boxes ticked.
Quantity is the name of the game here – quantity of screens, quantity of menu items and quantity of chicken wings.
And so being team players we ordered another kilo.
