Harrington’s Eel and Pie House on 3 Selkirk Road will close permanently on Saturday, March 29, 2025, after 116 years of serving generations of loyal customers.
In a statement on social media, the Harrington family said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce our last working day will be Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 11am to 5pm. We know this will be a sad moment for many of you.”
They also requested that customers placing large orders do so in advance.
They added: “To help us serve you quickly and efficiently, we kindly ask that customers wishing to order more than 10 pies please place their orders in advance. You can reach us at 020 8672 6415.
“We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your loyalty over the last 116 years, as well as for the support of your family members, both near and far.
“We have so many wonderful memories that we will cherish forever.”
The shop, known for its traditional pie, mash, and jellied eels, has been a fixture in the local community for more than a century. Its closure marks the end of an era for many who grew up visiting the shop.
In an earlier post, the family shared more details about their decision: “As you can imagine, it’s not been an easy decision for myself and the family to come to. In fact, it’s been very upsetting when it’s been in the family 116 years.
“But unfortunately, as a family, we’ve decided we need to move forward, so the property is up for sale and once it has sold we will be closing our doors. Until then, we are still open and selling hot pie and mash for all our beloved customers to enjoy.”
Customers shared their sadness at the news, with many reflecting on their memories of Harrington’s over the years:
One long-time customer wrote: “So sad. I grew up on this. Absolutely gutted. I moved from Tooting to Kent and still travelled to London for my pie and mash. I really wish you would stay open. I even worked there when I lived in London for a while.
“I will be back for my pie mash before you close. We will certainly miss you. Thanks to all the staff over the years for your hard work—and not forgetting Dave for all the work he put in over the years for our amazing pie mash, liquor, and eels. Big up and big respect to you.”
Another said: “Absolutely gutted. I have been using Harrington’s for over 40 years. I still remember going there with my mum and nan when I was young.
“No other pie and mash shop comes close. Thank you to all of the staff over the years for your hard work and top-notch grub.”
A third added: “As a kid, we queued the length of Tooting to get the best pie and mash on a Saturday.
“Sad times, but it’s been an incredible place that will be remembered. Everyone should eat local to support local businesses.”
