Laimonas Narvydas, 37, of Cross Road, was one of two men who died after the February 14 collision.
Mr Narvydas was a passenger in an Audi travelling west on the A13 which got into a crash close to the Ferry Lane Interchange.
Coroner’s officer Jean Smyth told East London Coroner’s Court the vehicle had been “travelling at speed” and “lost control”.
It clipped another vehicle, the court was told, causing it to skid, cross the central reservation and collide with a Honda Jazz.
The Honda driver was also killed and has been named locally as ‘Kalin’.
Mr Narvydas, who was Lithuanian, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5.23pm by a doctor from the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS).
His body was later identified by his partner. An online fundraising page said the couple had a ten-year-old daughter.
His cause of death has since been given as “multiple severe traumatic injuries”.
Mrs Smyth told coroner Nadia Persaud the incident had been filmed by both CCTV and a dash cam.
“I’m satisfied on those facts this death occurred in circumstances requiring an inquest,” said Mrs Persaud.
“There is a police investigation ongoing in relation to this inquest and therefore I’m going to give priority to the police investigation.
“If the police bring charges and there is to be a crown court trial then the inquest will be formally adjourned… if not, I will direct further investigation reports at that time.”
The coroner declared Mr Narvydas’s family “interested persons” – a legal status entitling them to scrutinise evidence before the inquest and question any witnesses called to testify.
She asked them to produce a statement about Mr Narvydas and include in it “any specific concerns” they had about his death.
A third man was hospitalised with life-changing injuries after the incident.
*The Metropolitan Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision or anybody who may have captured relevant dash cam footage.
They urged the public to dial 101 and quote the reference CAD 4979/14Feb.
A man in his mid-40s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail until late March.
