Jordan Fein’s production garnered five star reviews during its sold-out run at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre last year.
Now it will take up an eight-week residency at the Barbican Theatre before heading out on a major UK and Ireland tour.
Casting will be announced soon for the season, which runs from May 24 to July 19 with tickets now on sale from FiddlerOnTheRoofUK.com.
Jerry Bock, Joseph Stein, and Sheldon Harnick’s 1964 masterpiece has been hailed as one of the greatest musicals of all time, with a score featuring: ‘If I Were A Rich Man’, ‘Tradition’, ‘Matchmaker’ and ‘Sunrise, Sunset’.
It follows the fortunes of Tevye, a milkman living in a Jewish village in pre-revolution Russia who calls in the matchmaker to marry off his five daughters.
As each challenges his beliefs – against a backdrop of a changing world – he must decide whether to hold onto his proud traditions, or learn to embrace his children’s will.
Tom Scutt’s design was widely praised in reviews with The Standard hailing the production “exuberant” while The Guardian called it “sublime”.
Producer Howard Panter said: “I saw this incredible production last summer and was immediately blown away. I’m delighted to bring this masterpiece to the Barbican for what will be one of the major cultural highlights of the year.
“It was completely sold out during its Regent’s Park run, so this new production will give many more people the chance to see musical theatre at its very best.”
Drew McOnie and James Pidgeon, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre Chief Executives, said: “As part of an ongoing commitment to the touring of our work beyond Regent’s Park, we could not be more thrilled that our production of Fiddler on the Roof, created by a visionary team under the leadership of Jordan Fein, is getting a further life following it’s record-breaking run at the Open Air Theatre last summer.”
