The Orchard West theatre was given the Innovation Award at The Stage Awards 2025, which took place at the Linbury Theatre in London’s Royal Opera House on Monday, January 20.
The award praised Dartford Borough Council and Trafalgar Entertainment for turning a potential crisis into a success story after the sudden temporary closure of the Orchard Theatre.
In under three months, a state-of-the-art marquee theatre was constructed, providing a new performance space after the nearby Orchard Theatre was closed due to concerns over RAAC panels.
With the latest technology, Orchard West not only kept performances running but also spurred cultural and community growth in Dartford.
The Stage Awards, now in their 15th year, acknowledge excellence in UK theatre, with categories like Theatre of the Year, Community Award, and Producer of the Year.
Joint winners of Theatre of the Year were Nottingham Playhouse and Orange Tree Theatre, London.
The Well Walk Theatre, London, was named Theatre Building of the Year.
Michael Harrison Entertainment took home the Producer of the Year title.
The Community Award went to Synergy Theatre Project, while Projekt Europa was honoured with the International Award.
The Unsung Hero was Mike Elliott, and Campaign of the Year went to Park Theatre and Adam Blanshay Productions for Kim’s Convenience.
Michael Patrick won the Judges’ Award for The Tragedy of Richard III at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.
The Stage Awards, started in 2010, celebrate achievements in West End, regional, fringe, and international theatre.
They are organised by The Stage, a publication central to UK theatre since 1880.
The Stage editor Alistair Smith, said: “We are thrilled to announce the winners of The Stage Awards 2025, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of theatres and theatremakers from every corner of the UK.
“What sets these awards apart is their inclusivity — honouring excellence across all scales, from grassroots venues to large-scale commercial productions.
“This year’s winners exemplify the resilience, creativity and innovation that define our industry, and we’re proud to shine a spotlight on their remarkable contributions to theatre.”
