Sodo Pizza was created by Dan Birch, who wanted to create a light and more nutritional pizza dough, and today the restaurant has six branches across London, including one in Deptford High Street.
We were recently invited to Sodo to give their new winter menu a try, which includes popular pizzas like the Wicker Man made with pepperoni and nduja, along with a drinks menu of organic wines and other locally sourced drinks.
When you first walk in, you’re greeted to a really cosy dining space with rustic seating and plenty of plants, which just has this really chilled vibe.
In the evening the restaurant becomes even more cosy, with candles lit at every table, and it was packed by the time we finished at 8pm on Saturday evening.
We first started off with some drinks, they have a good selection of organic wines, ciders, beers and a few Italian-inspired cocktails too.
I went for the Ciello Bianco, which had a fruity and slightly sweet taste that wasn’t overly tangy or acidic.
To share we went for the Olives alongside their popular Burrata starter, which comes with a hazelnut and sundried tomato pesto, along with a portion of bread for dipping.
Their pizzas had a really interesting mix of toppings, with some I’d never seen anywhere else offer before, and they have eight pizzas on the menu along with regular specials on the board if you fancy something different.
I went with the White Goat, which came with Goat’s cheeses, olves, caramelised onion and chilli honey, while my friend went with the Lorena, which came with tomato, mozzarella, butternut squash, feta and pine nuts.
Both were really delicious; I loved the combination of goat’s cheese and the sweetness of the honey, whilst the Lorena had a really creamy and slightly sweet texture with the feta and butternut squash.
Trying the pizza I can definitely attest it was a really light pizza dough, and didn’t give me that all too inevitable post-pizza bloat feeling that often comes with tucking into a slice.
I loved the unique array of toppings and I’d definitely revisit again in the future to try more of them.
We were determined to try one of their desserts, they serve Italian-inspired classics like Affogato and Tiramisu as well as gelato.
We shared the Brownie served with vanilla gelato and a warm caramel sauce, and it was decadently gooey on the inside with a slight crunch on the outside.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place and how laid back it felt, as well as its convenient location right next to Deptford Station.
Sodo Pizza is open Tuesday – Thursday from 5pm to 10pm, and Friday – Saturday from 12pm to 10pm.
