Early birds – and perhaps people who had not yet gone to bed – dashed out as flakes were falling to throw snowballs and build snowmen.
But anyone emerging from their homes dressed in warm coats and hats later on Sunday found the air surprisingly warm, as rain washed away the last crusts of snow.
London’s weather has been changeable since the new year, with rain on Friday (January 4), followed by blue skies the following day.
Children dash out into the streets of Belsize Park as it snows (Image: Linda Grove) The city was under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for two days, with temperatures dropping as low as -2C overnight overnight on Saturday when the first flakes began to fall.
The snow settled but was short-lived as temperatures warmed; by 10am on Sunday rain was falling.
Keen photographer Linda Grove, who lives in Belsize Park, captured three consecutive days in the capital, starting with rain on Friday, sun on Saturday and children’s joy on Sunday.

Oliver Brett posted a picture of the scene in a north London street, describing the night’s snowfall as a “reasonably significant dump”.

The Met Office has issued yellow and amber warnings for more ice and snow across the UK.
In London any rain is forecast to clear today (January 6) with a projected cold and dry evening.
There will be possible sleet early on Tuesday morning followed by sunshine.
