Chances are many of you will be taking some festive road trips over the next few weeks.
Whether you’re heading north or further south, visiting a Christmas event or catching up with loved ones, finding a place of interest will not just break up the journey, it could be informative, too.
English Heritage has sites and events taking place up and down the country so there’s likely to be a scenic stop-off on the way. Some of the charity’s historic sites are near main roads and motorways so they make an excellent alternative to busy and congested service stations!
So, if you want to stretch your legs, see some of England’s unique heritage, and exchange a special gift this Christmas, (don’t miss out on the offer below!) here’s a taste of some of the key English Heritage places to visit around the country.
London, East of England and South East
Audley End House and Garden can be accessed from the M11 and is one of England’s finest country houses. Perfect for walks and exploring… finish off your visit with a treat in the café!
Also check out: Dover Castle, Home of Charles Darwin – Down House, Wrest Park, Lullingstone Roman Villa.
South West
Stonehenge is 10 miles from Salisbury on the A360 and the iconic site is definitely worth a detour. It’s open every day except Christmas day.

West Midlands and Cheshire
Kenilworth Castle is just off the A46, 12 miles from the M40 via Warwick Bypass. Stretch your legs with a climb to the very top of Leicester’s Tower and recharge your batteries in the tearoom in the old stables.

Located just three miles from the M1, Bolsover Castle never fails to impress. Once you’ve explored the castle, gardens and riding school, relax in the café before taking your onward journey. Children will love the outdoor play area too!
