Volunteers and community groups have joined park rangers rolling up their sleeves to lend a hand at Eastbrookend Country Park.
Almost 45,000 trees have been planted this year alone, well above the original 36,000 target. The volunteers and rangers put in 5,000 saplings in just one single day.
“We’ve invested millions to improve our green spaces,” Barking and Dagenham Council leader Dominic Twomey said. “Planting these trees brings many benefits to communities. It starts here, with all of us working together.”
The planting uses the ‘fast track’ Miyawaki technique that creates fast-growing forest ecosystems in urban spaces.
This establishes a forest up to 30 times more dense than conventional planting and grows 10 times faster.
It also creates woodland free of chemicals and fertiliser that sustains itself once established, supporting biodiversity.
