The former long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion, who turns 40 in October, is in Kansas to take on a little-known opponent and launch what will surely be a final bid to rediscover past glories after a torrid few years inside the ring.
Save for his trademark vicious first-round knockout of ex-European champion Robert Helenius in 2022, Wilder has been a shadow of his former destructive self since losing the final two instalments of his classic trilogy with Tyson Fury.
Retirement questions have since dogged a man who used to reign supreme as one of the sport’s most destructive knockout artists and formidable world champions in his prime, but he still appears to have no plans to hang up his gloves.
Instead he now attempts another comeback, beginning with a 10-rounder against fellow American Herndon, who is 24-5 and won his last three fights.

There can be no mistakes whatsoever from Wilder, now split from long-time trainer Malik Scott, on Friday night as he looks to win for only the second time in his last six fights, dating back to 2019.

Eddie Hearn and Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel have both sounded very open to the two long-time foes finally clashing later in 2025, possibly in October, November or December, with Joshua then potentially facing Tyson Fury in another long-awaited, money-spinning bout if the latter comes out of retirement again as expected.
Parker and Zhang always looked like big risks for Wilder, especially at this stage of his career, though Herndon is of a far lower profile and seems unlikely to pose anywhere near the same level of danger.
Herndon has been stopped four times in the past and Wilder needs to dispatch of him quickly and with his old trademark ruthlessness here, though in truth even if he does it will do virtually nothing to assuage those who feel he has little left in the tank and should have retired already.
