The London Assembly will also discuss topics including the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime’s (MOPAC) oversight of cultural change within the Met and unpaid carers during a week of public meetings in the chamber.
On Monday, January 12, the Economy, Culture and Skills Committee will hear from local organisations supporting unpaid carers across the capital.
Mike Rich, Chief Executive Officer of Barnet Carers, Carla Brain, Young Carers Project Manager at Enfield Carers Centre, and David Walker, Chief Executive Officer, Bromley Well / Bromley Third Sector Enterprise, are among those scheduled to speak.
The following day, Tuesday, January 13, the Fire Committee will examine the wellbeing of London’s firefighters, with particular focus on rising levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in the service.
Expert witnesses on the first panel, running from 10am to 11.30am, will include Professor Rowena Hill of Nottingham Trent University, Dr Carolina Campodonico from the University of Lancashire, Professor Jo Yarker from the London Centre for Work and Health, and Dr Danielle Lamb, also with the centre.
A second panel from 11.35am to 12.55pm will include frontline and professional voices such as Dean Corney, a firefighter with London Fire Brigade (LFB) and founder of Walk & Talk 999, Gareth Cook, London Regional Executive Lead Representative on Mental Health, Wellbeing & Workforce Culture, Fire Brigade Union (FBU), Dr Adrian Bevan and Spencer Sutcliff from the LFB, and Joss Gaynor of the Fire Fighters Charity.
On Wednesday, the Police and Crime Committee will turn its attention to cultural change within the Metropolitan Police.
The session will assess the effectiveness of oversight by MOPAC following further incidents of racism and sexism within the force since the Casey review.
David Spencer of Policy Exchange, Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, Chair, National Police Chiefs’ Council, and Andy George, President of the National Black Police Association, will appear on the first panel, running from 10am to 11.15am.
The second panel, from 11.20am to 12.20pm, will feature Mirren Gidda, Chair of Tower Hamlets Community Monitoring Group, Collet Hunter, Vice-Chair of Lewisham Safer Neighbourhood Board, and Ian Weatherley, Chair of Havering Community Monitoring Group.
The weekly will conclude with Mayor’s Question Time on Thursday, where London Assembly Members will have the opportunity to question the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan on topics including Actions as Mayor, MPS Budget, Beam Park Station, Support for Vision Zero on red routes, and Budget 2026/27.
