The fire service was called to an end-of-terrace house on Belgrave Avenue around 4.40am today (April 30) where the ground floor and part of the first floor were in flames
A man was rescued via a staircase from the first floor by firefighters in breathing masks.
He was later declared dead at the scene by the air ambulance.
Another woman fled the house before the fire service arrived and suffered smoke inhalation.
A neighbour in a nextdoor house was also treated for smoke inhalation.
People in the surrounding area took to social media to share their concern about a large number of emergency vehicles in the street, with eight calls being made about the fire.
In total, 30 firefighters in five fire engines from Harold Hill, Romford, Hornchurch and Dagenham fire stations extinguished the blaze just before 7am.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police.
