Los Blancos comfortably topped their group, accumulating seven from a possible nine points, defeating Pachuca and Salzburg, and drawing to Al-Hilal in the process, before a lethargic 1-0 win over Juventus in the last-16 stage.
Dortmund’s path to the last eight has been very similar to their Spanish counterparts, having topped their group with two wins and a draw from three games.
The Germans then beat Monterrey 2-1 in a somewhat unconvincing manner after scoring twice early in the game.

Real Madrid vs Dortmund team news
After coming off the bench against Juventus, Kylian Mbappe may be in line for a starting berth.
The French talisman has recently been sidelined after suffering with gastroenteritis.
Mbappe’s return could see Gonzalo Garcia drop to the bench despite his impressive form in the Frenchman’s absence. The forward has registered three goals and one assist in four Club World Cup games.
Elsewhere, Jobe Bellingham was booked for a tackle on Nelson Deossa in their round of 16 win, and because he picked up a yellow card in a group game against Ulsan HD, the 19-year-old will miss the Real Madrid fixture.
Serhou Guirassy will be expected to lead the Dortmund front line as the striker has scored 12 goals in his last ten appearances for Dortmund in all competitions, including two against Monterrey.
Real Madrid vs Dortmund prediction
Kovac has already conceded that his side are underdogs in this fixture.
Dortmund’s high line has also proven to be a weakness this tournament and and will no doubt look to be exploited by the pace of Vinicius Junior and Mbappe.
Xabi Alonso is no stranger to Dortmund as he competed against Kovac’s side as recently as last season when still in charge of Leverkusen.
Dortmund will provide a similar test to Real Madrid in terms of quality, but Los Blancos will be expected to prevail.
Head to head (h2h) history and results
Real Madrid played Dortmund in last season’s Champions League. Vinicius Junior grabbed a hat-trick as Madrid thrashed the German side 5-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
