Jason Conde, 41, was jailed for over three years today by a judge who said the attack could have killed her.
The incident took place on May 9 last year when the victim, the mother of one of Conde’s children, went to his home to confront him over a parenting issue, prosecutor Gary Venturi told Croydon Crown Court.
Conde claims she was “spoiling for a fight” and was armed with a police-style baton, something the woman denies.
A fight broke out instantly during which the victim felt a number of heavy blows to her body, she didn’t know it at the times but Conde had stabbed her six times with a sharp point tyre repair tool.
Conde stopped his attack when the woman began coughing up blood, the court heard.
Unaware that she had been stabbed, the woman left Conde’s house whilst his family phoned for an ambulance.
Mr Venturi told the court the victim noticed she was bleeding and felt breathless as she made her way home, but said she was scared that if she sat down she might die.
She was soon rushed to hospital by helicopter with a punctured lung and six stab wounds.
Conde later went to a friend’s house and burned his clothes in the woods.
When he was arrested on May 12 he said he was acting in self-defence as she had forced her way into his home armed with a baton.
Despite this, Conde pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm.
Mr Venturi, summarising a statement from the victim, said: “It’s horrible knowing someone can have this effect on your life. He’s ruined his own life as well as everybody else’s.”
Jason Conde (Image: Met Police) Piers Kiss-Wilson, defending, said the victim went to Conde’s home spoiling for a fight and armed with a weapon but conceded that Conde’s response was excessive.
He said Conde had shown remorse immediately when he stopped the attack and asked family members to phone an ambulance.
Recorder Collins KC, sentencing, told Conde: “You only stopped when she was coughing up blood and you thought she was having a fit. This was a prolonged and serious assault. Quite obviously, you could have killed her.”
The judge said a probation officer who had assessed Conde concluded that he poses a threat to partners and ex-partners.
“I note that you describe yourself to the probation officer as the victim. Given the injuries she suffered, that is a remarkable suggestion,” Recorder Collins said.
He sentenced Conde to three years and four months in prison.
