“I’ve had lots of experience working with that key age group, it is such a transitional period for our young people which makes it a really important job, pastorally and academically. When I got into teaching, I always knew wanted to be a head of 6th form and I really enjoy it.”
Oasis Academy Enfield place immense importance on their values as a school. We want our students to ‘lead, excel, aspire, be resilient and nurture others.’ Our ethos is to ‘be the best that you can be.’

“That is what we stand for, that’s what we live and breathe every day. If you come to our sixth form, we have some incredible, experienced staff to support young people to become the very best version of themselves. We’ve always prided ourselves as an academy on being really caring and nurturing. We recognise that in Sixth Form, the transition to adulthood comes with lots of difficulties; social, personal and that young people today face a myriad of pressures from social media that can impact their well-being. And so that nurturing environment here is really, really important.
“But that also needs to be underpinned by the qualifications our students achieve as they can be truly transformational. We offer high quality teaching that enables our students to come out with the very best grades they can achieve. The grades they leave with allow them to compete with anybody, to get those top places in universities and then later, into their careers. It’s a holistic approach, recognising academic excellence, but also creating an environment which cares and nurtures.” “No matter your starting point, you will achieve in our Sixth Form.”
The Oasis Academy community is very proudly diverse, and as a Sixth Form we certainly celebrate the benefits of that diversity within the school.
“I think that we are just a reflection of the rest of the school community. We have Culture Day in the summer where we celebrate all the different cultures in our academy. We have stands and cultural food and music, so it is a really inclusive, diverse environment which is welcoming to all. The Sixth Form reflects that diversity across the school as well.”
Success is defined differently at Oasis Academy, Martin emphasises that each young person has a different measure of success, and the Sixth Form always celebrate every type of success.
“We want students to be immensely proud of what they’ve achieved, to know that they have done the very best that they can do. It’s also about what they want to go on to next, whether that be employment, apprenticeships or a degree. We are really proud of the fact that everybody who applied for university got into their university of choice. However, some young people know university isn’t for them, so our role is to provide them with the skills and knowledge to find the pathway that’s right for them.”
Oasis Academy Enfield is always looking to create opportunities for their students to succeed. Not only in their immediate studies but looking to their future too. We have run a Basketball Academy for several years in the Sixth Form. It attracts lots of students from within the school and beyond and provides them with professional coaching from an ex-GB international and has become a central part of our Sixth Form offer. Over the last two academic years we have had 5 students who have gone on to study in the USA with Basketball scholarships.
We are always looking for ways to provide more opportunities for our young people and we have recently teamed up with PSG football club to run a football academy which we are running from next September. This is a hugely exciting opportunity and is a really great development for our academy!
Academically we have focused on the introduction of subjects that the school feel the students have a ‘real appetite for.’ “When I arrived, the majority of students went on to do business or finance. We run BTEC Business as a single and a double qualification. We’ve also introduced economics because we recognise there is a real appetite for students to go into the finance sector. Economics also gives them access into studying in the top Russell Group universities. We also offer other BTECs, to meet the needs of our school community so we also offer sport, applied science and we run Criminology, which has been highly popular and is quite a unique selling point within the borough.
“The social sciences have seen huge numbers and increasing popularity which can facilitate careers in the criminal justice sector. We introduced sociology last year so that you can do criminology, sociology and psychology or history and English linked into those. Combined with the traditional facilitating subjects in the sciences, English and Maths, we have a really comprehensive offer which is what makes our Sixth Form a great place to study.”
