The fourth International Greenwich Olympiad (IGO 2025) took place from June 22 to 28, bringing together 522 students aged 10 to 18 and 186 supervisors from 53 countries across two UK cities.
Participants presented 356 projects in 13 categories, exploring solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
North London Grammar School (NLGS), a recent member of the Unesco Associated Schools Network (ASPnet), played a key role in organising the Olympiad and promoting the values of academic excellence and global citizenship.
The school said it looks forward to contributing further to the ASPnet community through future editions of the Olympiad.
A spokesperson for the event said: “In the words of the visionary scientist Carl Sagan: ‘Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.’
“The International Greenwich Olympiad is where that incredible something begins—sparked by the brilliance, passion, and dedication of the world’s youth.”
New categories introduced in 2025 included health sciences and drama, expanding the competition’s reach across both arts and sciences.
The Olympiad began with an opening ceremony on June 23 at Oxford Town Hall, featuring keynote speeches from figures in education, diplomacy, and science.
The following day, the event moved to Queen Mary University of London for the exhibition and judging.
Pupils showcased research and art projects focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in areas such as sustainability, health, education, and technology.
More than 100 judges from academia, industry, and research engaged with students, offering feedback and mentorship.
Educators also took part in professional development workshops.
Throughout the week, students and supervisors enjoyed guided tours of London’s landmarks, combining cultural exploration with opportunities for intercultural exchange and friendship.
The Olympiad concluded on June 27 with an award ceremony at the Greenwood Theatre, King’s College London.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded, along with certificates and honourable mentions.
The ceremony also featured cultural dances and musical performances by students.
