Manchester City travel to Newcastle United in the first of this week’s Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Pep Guardiola’s side make the trip to St James’ Park for the opening match of their two-legged tie against the defending champions.
City have stuttered in the Premier League in recent weeks, with three straight draws seeing them lose pace with Arsenal at the top of the table.
All the while third-placed Aston Villa have closed the gap and are now level on points with them.
City are now six points adrift of the Gunners at the summit, and they are looking to get back to winning ways against top-tier opposition quickly.
Guardiola’s men rediscovered that winning feeling at the weekend, brushing aside Exeter City 10-1 in the FA Cup third round.
They take on a Newcastle side that are sixth in the English top flight, just three points shy of the top four.
Eddie Howe’s team have pieced together three consecutive victories in the league since their Boxing Day defeat by Manchester United, and they showed great character to beat Bournemouth on penalties in a marathon FA Cup tie at the weekend.

The Swiss is on the treatment table after suffering an ankle injury that could rule him out for the rest of the campaign, although Howe hopes that will not be the case.
Elsewhere, versatile full-back and previous Man City transfer target Tino Livramento is set for a long period out with a hamstring injury, although the length of his absence is yet to be determined.
The Tyneside outfit are really struggling with their numbers in defence, with Emil Krafth out with a knee injury, Dan Burn remains sidelined with a broken rib and punctured lung, and Jamaal Lascelles is not training with the squad.
Further forward, Jacob Murphy and Anthony Elanga are due fitness tests to decide whether they can feature against City, while backup striker William Osula is out with an ankle problem.
For City, Rodri’s return has been huge, but it is in their defensive unit where they have problems.
Guardiola diagnosed Dias with a hamstring issue, while John Stones is still “not ready” after his own struggles.
Forward Oscar Bobb remains sidelined, as too does Savinho, to leave City light out wide.
Newcastle vs Man City prediction
This is a game where neither side will be at full strength as a result of their respective injury crises, but the style of football that both managers demand should make it an entertaining encounter.
The raucous home support could sway it in Newcastle’s favour, but how will their threadbare squad handle the turnaround after being dragged through extra time and penalties by Bournemouth at the weekend?
City are the fresher after they steamrollered Exeter, although star striker Erling Haaland has scored just once in his last five games. Can he re-find his scoring touch here?
