Muswell Hill Library could finally reopen this autumn

Muswell Hill Library closed in June 2023 with Haringey Council pledging refurbishment works would take a year.

However the project has been hit by delays and now may reopen in the autumn.

Meredith Gurwith contacted this paper after she said her attempts to nail down an opening date were ignored.

She said: “Muswell Hill Library has been closed for two years.

“There’s no sign of them reopening and no one including the local councillors can say when it will reopen.

“I have messaged Haringey library on social media but no reply.”

Muswell Hill Library in Queen’s Avenue, which opened in 1931, closed in 2023 to make improvements as part of a £4.9m capital investment programme Haringey Council has made for all libraries across the borough.

Improvement works, which include building a new lift and accessible toilets as well as reconfiguring the library’s floorplan, had been expected to be completed in spring 2024.

The refurbishment will also see new lighting and furniture installed, as well as a complete redecoration of the library’s interior.

Now it will not reopen until all of these libraries move to new opening hours and revised staffing levels.

Cllr Emily Arkell, Haringey Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “We are very much looking forward to launching the newly renovated Muswell Hill Library and are sorry it has been delayed beyond its original timeframe due to problems with the previous contractor.

“The project is now progressing well and the final phases of it are being pencilled in, with the new library now expected to re-open in the early autumn.

“Although the renovation works and preparations for re-opening are nearly complete, the council’s continued severe financial challenges mean that we are not now able to re-open the library until we have moved to the new operating hours and revised staffing levels across all our libraries.

“The improvements form part of a significant £4.9m capital investment programme we have been making in libraries across the borough.

“Following the major refurbishment, our residents will benefit from more accessible and improved library facilities courtesy of a reconfigured floorplan, with interior redecoration providing new bespoke lighting and furniture too.

“This provision will also be bolstered by a new accessible toilet and lift on-site.”
