A 67-year-old woman suffered life-changing injuries in the crash.
An inquest opened at Croydon Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, July 2, heard that police are in the “early stages of the investigation” into the crash.
Detective Sergeant Kayleigh Perry said enquiries so far suggest the driver lost control at the junction and collided with two pedestrians.
Both Mike and the woman who was hit were on the pavement at the time, DS Perry said.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, the court heard.
Mike was a passionate sportsman and had been a member of Burnt Ash Hockey Club.
“It is with great sadness that the club must report the death of life member and regular umpire Mike Course, who died aged 70,” the club said.
“Mike passed away late Saturday night after he was hit by a car after an evening out.”
Mike began playing hockey, cricket and rugby at Erith Grammar school and later moved into club hockey and cricket.
“Mike will be sorely missed by his family, members of both clubs and many people in Belvedere and Bexley villages, where he was a popular character in the local pubs,” the Burnt Ash Hockey Club said.
Senior Coroner Sarah Ormond-Walshe told Mike’s family members, who attended the hearing by video, that the inquest would be adjourned to let the police investigation take place.
“I’m really sorry for how awful things must be for you and how surreal this all must be,” she said.
