Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side were eight minutes away from recording an impressive win over Senegal on Friday, but Ismaila Sarr’s equaliser meant they had to settle for a draw.
That result, however, did stretch Ireland’s unbeaten run to four games as they build confidence ahead of their World Cup qualification campaign which gets underway with a double header against Hungary and Armenia in September.
Facing a Luxembourg side ranked 91st in the FIFA world rankings, Ireland are heavy favourites to win tonight.
However, Hallgrimsson has issued a warning over complacency to his players after recalling Luxembourg’s shock win over Sweden in a friendly back in March.
He said: ”Luxembourg have shown in the past how quickly they have developed as a football team. They have had the same coach for a long time, really consistent in team selection, so it’s more like playing a club team.
“I watched the Sweden game when they played here, they beat Sweden 1-0 and they could have scored more goals against Sweden.
“And I know a little bit about them, the strength of Sweden. So I wouldn’t look at it as a shock to the nation if we did not get a good result here.
“It’s that good a team, that a win here would be really good for us at this stage. I hope nobody is taking them lightly, if that is the right word to say.”
