France have it all to do tonight to overturn their 2-0 deficit against familiar opponents Croatia in the second leg of a heavyweight Nations League quarter-final tie.
Les Bleus endured an evening to forget in Split on Thursday, with the damage inflicted during a woeful first half at Stadion Poljud as Ante Budimir and veteran Ivan Perisic gave Zlatko Dalic’s side a commanding advantage to take to Paris as the likes of Ibrahima Konate and William Saliba struggled in defence.
Captain Kylian Mbappe was unable to spark a comeback for France on his return to the international fold after six months under Didier Deschamps, but he will be expected to lead a revival on Sunday evening as his manager no doubt ponders some key personnel changes.
The winners of the tie – a repeat of the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow, which the French won 4-2 – will advance to the last four and also be placed in Group D in 2026 World Cup qualifying, joining Ukraine, Iceland and Azerbaijan.
The losers, meanwhile, will go into Group L alongside Montenegro, the Czech Republic, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.
