The Gunners had been favourites to seal a second placed finish for a third successive year, but a run of one win in six has placed that in serious doubt as they’re only two points ahead of the Magpies ahead of this afternoon’s showdown.
Victory in their final home game of the campaign will effectively guarantee second place for Mikel Arteta’s side, whilst a point will be enough for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification.
That said, this is the fourth meeting between the two teams this season and Newcastle have a clear edge in the recent head-to-head.
Not only are they unbeaten against the Gunners this term, they have won all three games – including a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium en route to winning the Carabao Cup – and are yet to concede a goal.
Should the Magpies extend this record, they will be confident of a return to Europe’s premier competition. Though, anything other than all three points in north London will see their Champions League fate decided on the final day.
