Anti-social fly-tipping and discarded litter have become so bad that Haringey Council has given out fines totalling almost £1.4 million in just 12 months.
Officers issued 2,554 fines from last April to March this year, and the authority is now stepping up its actions even more to catch the dumpers by taking on an extra 15 enforcement officers, it has emerged.
“Those who damage public spaces will be held accountable,” Haringey Council cabinet member Cllr Seema Chandwani warned.
“We are determined to put an end to dumping. Keeping our streets clean is a shared responsibility and everyone must do their part.”
A public survey carried out by the council claims “overwhelming support for tough action”, with 96% agreeing with heavy fines and 94% for penalties for littering and dog fouling.
The ‘stick’ approach is part of the council’s strategy for “a collective sense of responsibility for public spaces”.
Households are being urged to deal with waste properly and even report any fly-tipping which can be done online on the “haringey.gov.uk” website’s “report-dumped-rubbish-fly-tipping” page.
