In the aftermath of the first warm(ish) weekend of the year, rubbish was still spilling out of bins on Monday morning.
X user Renée Hoenderkamp posted a picture on the social network saying: “Hampstead Heath this morning… Disgusting people and useless councils.”
Hampstead Heath is managed by City of London Corporation, which is responsible for rubbish within the 11,000 acre park. Camden and Barnet councils are responsible for bins on the perimeter.
Each organisation urged visitors to take their rubbish away with them.
A spokesperson for the City of London Corporation said the heath attracts more than eight million visitors every year.
They added: “Our teams take great pride in keeping the Heath safe and looking its best all year round.
“We encourage visitors to put their rubbish in the bins provided or take it home with them.”
Both Camden and Barnet councils said they regularly empty litter bins around the Heath.
A Camden Council spokesperson added: “Residents and visitors must also play their part in disposing of their rubbish responsibly.
“If anyone sees an overflowing bin, please report this to us via the Love Clean Streets app and our teams will deal with this as quickly as possible.”
A Barnet Council spokesperson said: “We are grateful to the vast majority of our residents and visitors who do not litter but take their rubbish home or find another bin when one is full.
“Littering not only damages the environment but also damages the appearance of our otherwise beautiful parks and open spaces.
“We would encourage residents to report littering in our parks, gardens and open spaces at: www.barnet.gov.uk/report-it-now.”
