The Global Switch House, which has been operating since 2002, will see new east and west extensions added to its current structure in Nutmeg Lane.
Changes to the north and south facades, the infill of the reception atrium, and upgrades to rooftop chillers are also included in the approved plans.
The proposal was unanimously approved by Tower Hamlets Council’s strategic development committee late last month.
Councillor Gulam Kibria Choudhury raised concerns about the centre’s proximity to residential areas.

However, officials assured that the centre poses no health risks, with an officer explaining that the data centre stores large hardware drives and requires space for air circulation and temperature control.
Councillor Shahaveer Shubo Hussain inquired about changes to the building’s appearance.
Officials noted that the extensions would slightly alter the design and exterior look, with the addition of coloured cladding for visual interest.
Councillor Rebaka Sultana questioned the employment impact of the expansion but officials were unsure of the exact number of current employees.
The extension would not create any new jobs, the meeting was told, but is set to bring about 20 construction phase apprenticeships.
But, as the scheme will not result in any new jobs, officials will request a financial contribution instead of these apprenticeships.
Data centres like Global Switch House primarily house computer equipment and need specialists for maintenance and monitoring.
