Located in Bromley’s Downe Village, Durbar Spice opened its doors in September 2024, bringing a taste of Nepal to one of the oldest villages in London.
Situated at 11 High Street, Downe, the restaurant sits in the heart of the village — famously known as the home of Charles Darwin — combining the historic charm of the building with the exotic flavours of South Asia.

Owner Saroj Rijal said: “We wanted to create something simple, warm and honest.
“The décor is modest, but the flavours are rich.
“Our roots are in Nepal and India, and we let the food speak for itself.”
As for the food, the menu — created by chefs who have drawn on their experiences both at home and abroad — offers a mix of Nepalese and Indian dishes, from fragrant curries to traditional Himalayan plates.
Their Nepalese momo dumplings have already become a standout favourite for many visitors, along with a unique house creation, the Downe Village Special, which blends traditional Nepalese cooking with a modern twist.

Saroj said: “Every dish carries a bit of home with it.
“For us, food is not just something to eat — it’s culture, memory and heritage.
“Our chefs learned to cook long before they ever stepped into a professional kitchen.
“They grew up in Nepalese households where food is central to family life.
“Those early memories and traditions are what give our dishes their depth.”

The restaurant has already received national recognition after just 12 months, being named a finalist for ‘Best Newcomer’ in the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA) 2025.
Saroj added: “To receive this kind of recognition so early on is incredible.
“It shows that people appreciate the authenticity and care we put into every meal.”

But it’s not just about the food, giving back to the community is also at the heart of the business.
The team is set to host a lineup of charity dinners by March 2026 to support two of the Mayor of Bromley’s chosen charities: CASPA and The Maypole Project.
Saroj explained: “We feel strongly about giving back.
“Downe has welcomed us with open arms, and we want to return that warmth by supporting causes that truly matter here.”
