The National Trust gem is just an hour from London
Standen House and Garden was once the home of James and Margaret Beale who chose the idyllic location thanks to its views of the Sussex countryside.
The property was designed by Philip Webb and is described as “one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship.”
Standen House has Morris & Co. interiors, which the National Trust shares, which help create a “warm and welcoming atmosphere.”
The home is dressed for a weekend stay in 1925 to help guests imagine what it would be like to be a guest at Standen.
The gardens have had a major restoration, and seeing the 12-acre hillside garden highlights the property’s award-winning plant collection.
The property also has a play area for children which features a willow maze, a wooden swing and a balance beam.

One TripAdvisor, one guest said: “Really interesting house – a bit more intimate than a large stately home. Feel I need another visit to take things in. Didn’t see much of the gardens as it was very rainy and we ran out of time before it stopped raining! Food in the restaurant very tasty.”
