The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a shell was discovered in the grounds of a college on John Islip Street, Westminster yesterday (December 1) at around 3.45pm.
Chelsea College of Arts is the only college located on this road.
John Islip Street was closed in both directions and the college was evacuated.
Around 4.30pm, the Met’s bomb disposal team removed the bomb and declared it safe.
A TikTok was posted by a user by the name of theroadtounemployment showing the scene of the evacuation.
The college and surrounding roads have since been reopened.
A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Police were called at 15.44hrs on Monday, 1 December after an unexploded shell was discovered in the grounds of a college on John Islip Street, Westminster.
“As a precaution, John Islip Street was closed in both directions and the college was briefly evacuated.
“Shortly before 16.30hrs, the historic ordnance was declared safe and removed by the Met’s bomb disposal team.
“The college and the surrounding roads were reopened.”
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters were called to an automatic fire alarm on John Islip Street in Westminster.
“Crews conducted a thorough investigation and no fire was found.
“The Brigade was called at 1657 and the incident was over at 1704.
“One fire engine from Lambeth Fire Station attended the scene.”
