New data from property website Zoopla, shared exclusively with Metro, has revealed how much salary you need to buy a house, with the most topping £100,000.
This is based on a mortgage capped at 4.5 times annual earnings and a 20 per cent deposit.
This means even the “most affordable” parts of the city remain firmly out of reach for many average earners.
The south east London borough of Bromley came in just under £100,000, at £92,000 a year, ranking it in 15th position in London after Lambeth, with the average house prices at £517,300.
According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and HM Land Registry from last year, some of Bromley’s most expensive neighbourhoods could cost up to £825,000 to live in.
This is based on data that revealed median house prices for every middle layer super output area (MSOA) in Bromley for the year ending March 2025.
Among Bromley’s most expensive areas to live are Langley Park where prices averaged at £825,000, Keston with an average of £725,000 and Petts Wood where house prices averaged at £700,000.
These were closely followed by areas such as Chislehurst West and Elmstead (£693,520) and West Wickham (£672,500).
Last year Bromley received a number of accreditations and accolades, being featured among the UK’s and London’s best places to live lists.
From being named one of the UK’s best places to retire by The Telegraph to ranking among London’s most family-friendly boroughs, the area has been praised for its green spaces, safety, strong transport links and community feel.
National outlets including The Guardian and Rightmove also highlighted Bromley as one of the happiest places to live, with residents pointing to its parks, suburban homes, respected schools and easy access to both central London and the countryside as key reasons for its popularity.
Here’s how much salary you would need to live in each south east London borough:
