Michael Dowler, who was also known as Mike, Mick, or “Irish Mick,” had become a recognisable figure – he never missed a day of work, even during the Covid pandemic.
Michael was loved by many and known for his dedication to keeping the streets clean.
His sudden death has left a significant void in the community as tributes have flooded in on the Beckenham community Facebook page, with over 1,300 of his supporters sharing messages of love and admiration.
The Metropolitan Police Service released a statement in honour of Michael, calling him a “true gentlemen” with a caring personality.

“Our wonderful, Michael Dowler, who was a true gentleman, caring personality, also very big asset to our community.
“Three days ago, he unexpectedly passed away.
“As his local community officers, we are sending our deepest condolences to his family.
“Dear Michael RIP…
“You was one in a million, true gentlemen, great person, you will be missed by us all.
“Thank you for your service.”
In September 2021, the Mayor of Bromley awarded Michael a certificate after he was voted “Road Sweeper of the Year,” along with Paul Spiers, another well-known Beckenham road sweeper.

Paul Spiers later made headlines because, in 2024, hundreds of residents in Beckenham rallied to raise over £3,000 to send him on a holiday, a gesture of gratitude for his years of service and cheerful presence on their streets.
Michael’s daughters, Sharon and Hannah, have set up a GoFundMe page to organise a memorial for their father.
The GoFundMe statement reads: “In Loving Memory of Michael Dowler, known to others as Dad, Grandad, Mike, Mickey, Irish Mick etc.
“The outpouring of love, kindness, and appreciation for Dad has been truly overwhelming.”
Sharon and Hannah expressed their gratitude to the community for their support.
