Oh dear, once again Farage’s policies don’t stack up. It took him a while to come up with a concrete policy idea. Nigel Farage has unveiled his plan for tax cuts for the wealthy, to restore non-dom tax breaks for the super-rich, in exchange for a ‘Britannia card’ worth £250,000 each, as part of a special tax regime. There’s one problem though. His plans have fallen apart at the slightest bit of scrutiny. Farage likes to portray himself as a ‘man of the people’, and yet his priority is to help the super-rich. He has unveiled plans to give a…
‘Such a move would be completely non-proportional and a hugely worrying restriction on the right to peaceful protest’ MPs have voiced concern as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said the government plans to proscribe Palestine Action under terrorism laws after they targeted an RAF base last week. A draft proscription order will be presented to Parliament next Monday, and if passed, will make it illegal to be part of or “invite support for” the pro-Palestinian protest network under Section 3 of the Terrorism Act 2000. In a written statement to Parliament today, Cooper said that since it was formed in…
Nine years on, it seems as though those who had rubbished ‘experts’ for warning about the dire impact of Brexit on the economy, could do with some quiet reflection. On the ninth anniversary of the vote to leave the European Union, the Office for Budget Responsibility’s projections in terms of the negative impact it would have on state of the public’s finances have materialised, despite pro-Brexit economists questioning its findings at the time. Today marks nine years since the EU referendum took place, amid a divisive campaign that saw the Vote Leave campaign accused of peddling untruths and sensationalist claims.…
‘I simply don’t recognise the picture that Sarah Pochin tries to paint of Runcorn. It’s not based on reality.’ Reform MP Sarah Pochin has been criticised for making claims about asylum seekers living in HMOs with “no evidence”. In her maiden speech to Parliament in May, Pochin said there were a number of “illegal immigrants” in Runcorn and claimed that HMOs were “breeding grounds for organised crime gangs”. However, Cheshire’s Labour Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Dan Price, said Cheshire Police had received “no evidence” to support her claims. Cheshire Police also said it was “not aware of any widespread…
It should concern progressives that there is now a concerted attempt to raise funds to make Farage PM, from some of the same sources who also donated to Trump. A new Reform-linked think-tank is trying to raise more than £25 million in a bid to make Nigel Farage Prime Minister by 2029, raising funds from donors both in the US and UK, as it seeks to capitalise on the MAGA movement. In a desperate bid to take the far-right Farage to number 10, the Times reports that the “Centre for a Better Britain (CBB) will plough the funds into the…
The Reform UK leader is trying to claim the policy will help low-paid workers, but in reality it will benefit billionaires A new tax policy that Nigel Farage is set to unveil has been slammed as a ‘giveaway’ for foreign billionaires. At a press conference this morning, the Reform UK leader will announce that if elected, his party would reintroduce non-dom tax status and allow the super-rich to avoid paying tax in the UK for a one-off fee of £250,000 every ten years. In an article for the Telegraph, Farage said that millionaires and billionaires who pay the fee for…
Enough to build seven Elizabeth lines. After over a decade of broken promises, the vast gulf in investment between the North and South of England has been laid bare. New analysis from the think tanks IPPR North and IPPR reveals that if the North had received the same level of transport investment per person as London since 2009/10, it would have seen an additional £140 billion, enough to build seven Elizabeth Lines. According to Treasury figures, between 2009/10 and 2022/23, London received £1,183 of transport investment per person each year. In contrast, the North received just £486. The disparity is…
“This is the act of a genocidal regime dragging the world toward catastrophic war.” The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has condemned Israel’s military strikes on Iran in the “strongest possible terms” and is urging the UK government to take immediate action. On June 13, Israel launched a series of intense attacks on Iran’s nuclear and military sites, claiming the strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from advancing its atomic capabilities. According to Iran’s UN envoy, at least 78 people were killed, including senior military officials and scientists. In retaliation, Iran fired waves of ballistic missiles at Israel, with explosions…
“Families can’t wait any longer, they’ve waited for the UK government and there’s been no action.” The Scottish government has announced it will end the controversial two-child benefit cap, increasing pressure on Labour to commit to scrapping the policy across the UK. Introduced by the Conservative government in 2017, the UK-wide cap restricts families from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for more than two children, except in certain circumstances. The policy has been widely criticised for pushing families into poverty, with each additional child costing affected households over £3,000 annually in lost support. Under the new plans, applications…
In 2023, more than half of women escaping domestic abuse were turned away from safe refuges because of chronic shortages. The Council of Europe, a body which aims to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe, has warned about the impact austerity measures have had on the UK’s ability to protect women from domestic violence. In a report published this week, the council warned that years of cost-cutting have left women’s shelters and vital support services “underfunded and understaffed,” compromising the country’s compliance with the Istanbul Convention. The legally binding treaty requires member states to prevent…
