The Anglesea Arms in Woolwich New Road is currently closed, but first opened to punters in 1850.
Perpetual Property has now asked for permission from Greenwich Council to knock down the building and replace it with a four-storey block.
The scheme, named Anglesea Crescent by the developer, would deliver seven new flats, most of which will have two bedrooms, aimed at couples and small families.
Proposals also include creating a “commercial social gathering space” on the ground floor of the block to replace the existing pub.
Few details have been provided as to what kind of venue this would be, but planning documents claim it would be a “hip and vibrant” space for the community to gather.
The existing pub has struggled in recent years, with its licence suspended by the council in 2022 over an alleged pub brawl “fuelled by drugs and alcohol”.
The applicant claims that the pub saw a “decline in usage” in recent years, and that its redevelopment would “meet the housing and social needs” of the borough.
“The proposal aims to redevelop the site to create a social gathering space, ensuring that the new development respects the historical significance of the building while enhancing its community function,” they add.
“The redevelopment will be sensitive to the character of the conservation area.”
The current plans have been submitted as an outline planning application, meaning that even if the council grants approval, the developer will have to gain further planning permission for detailed proposals ahead of starting work at the site.
The developer says that they are seeking “advice” from the council on a number of matters relating to the development, including its appearance, layout and scale.
