Senegal were the first team to confirm their place in Sunday’s final, edging out Egypt in Tangier last Wednesday thanks to Sadio Mane’s late strike.
Hosts Morocco then needed a penalty shootout to edge past Nigeria in Rabat after a goalless draw in regulation and extra time.
That set up a heavyweight final on Sunday and Senegal emerged victorious thanks to Pape Gueye’s sensational strike in the fourth minute of extra-time.
However, that is only half of the story. Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz wasted a golden, if controversial, opportunity to win it for the hosts in stoppage time as his panenka penalty attempt was easily caught by Edouard Mendy.
This was after Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, who had minutes earlier seen his team denied a goal for a foul, ordered his players off the pitch after referee Jean Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR review eight minutes into stoppage time.
Nigeria, meanwhile, secured yet another podium finish after beating Egypt on penalties in the third place-play-off on Saturday.
