The concept, where a female and male tennis player face off in a singles match, is the fourth of its kind after Bobby Riggs’ two encounters with Margaret Court and Billie Jean King in 1973.
It returned when Jimmy Connors took on Martina Navratilova in an all-American match back in 1992, which Connors won 7-5 6-2 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Since then, the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ match has been shelved, but this year, the dust has been blown off to serve up one another enticing match-up.
Sabalenka, the Belarusian, is the reigning US Open champion in the women’s game, and has four Grand Slam titles to her name.
The charismatic Kyrgios, meanwhile, reached the Wimbledon final in 2022, losing to Novak Djokovic.
The Australian has played just five matches this year in an injury-hit season where he has fallen to 671.
The match has seen much criticism thrown at it, with many claiming that it is simply a money-grab from both players, but Sabalenka and Kyrgios have quelled the backlash, insisting that the highest integrity will be upheld.
Most importantly, both players are desperate to win.
What time is Battle of the Sexes today?
Sabalenka plays Kyrgios at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai today, Sunday, December 28.
The match is due to get underway at 3.45pm GMT.
