The emergency services were called to a “large house fire” on Milton Road in the Warley area on Friday (November 28).
Firefighters brought the fire under control but a woman died at the scene.
An elderly man was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
A second house was also damaged but none of its occupants were injured.
The cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
Seven fire crews worked to extinguish the fire inside the house as road closures were put in place.

A large amount of smoke was visible across Brentwood with many smelling the fumes from the fire.
Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed.
An Essex Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called to a large house fire at a house in Milton Road, Warley, Brentwood, on Friday (November 28).
“Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control.
“An elderly man was treated at hospital for smoke inhalation.
“Sadly, a woman, died at the scene.
“Her next of kin have been informed.
“The cause of the fire is being treated as non-suspicious.
“A second house sustained fire damage, but no occupants were injured.”
