The British Youth International College (BYITC) has announced 11 winners of its 8th International Annual Maths Olympiad, a free global competition for students aged four to 14, held in celebration of Maths Week Scotland from September 22 to 28.
Among the winners is seven-year-old Prachi Patel from Carshalton, who attends Gorringe Park Primary School and took the top spot at Level 2.
Her parents, Brinda and Shagird Patel, said: “What I love most about BYITC is how they make each child feel special.
“My daughter’s confidence in maths has grown tremendously – she now explains concepts to her friends!”
Prachi was one of thousands of students worldwide who participated in the week-long challenge.
The competition is based on BYITC’s Abacus Maths programme and consists of 50 questions to be answered in one hour, with students logging into BYITC’s Zoom platform to complete level-appropriate exams in front of invigilators.
Dr Rashmi Mantri, founder of BYITC, said: “Congratulations to each of the winners.
“Every child who took part deserves enormous credit as we can tell they gave it their best shot and worked very hard.
“Since we launched the Challenge, we have been had more than 100 winners which is a great achievement.
“The success of our Olympiads and others, such as the Scottish Maths Challenge, reflect the educational value of such kinds of Olympiads, while the sheer scale of entries from across the globe is very satisfying and give us confidence that there is a huge hunger out there for learning more about, and getting lots of fun from, playing with, numbers.
“Young people are naturally competitive and derive lots of fun from playing and experimenting with numbers. Competitions like this prepare them for higher levels of assessments and exams as they go through their educational journey as they worked on time management and enhance their problem-solving skills.
“As we know from research, such high-level game playing promotes healthy competition, significantly boosts logical thinking skills, an excellent preparation from a future which is going to be dominated by AI.”
Other winners from the UK include Iman Guellec, 5, from Cambridgeshire (Level 1); Nitara Madan, 8, from London (Level 3); Venisha Valluri, 8, from Newcastle upon Tyne (Level 4); Rishaan Adarsh, 8, from Manchester (Level 5); and Ninitan Niruthan, 10, from Barnet (Level 6).
Additional winners were Jerion Jorel Castro, 12, from Evesham (Level 7); Adhrit Alluri, 8, from Barnsley (Level 8); Jithya Krithika Kotte, 12, from Liverpool (Level 9); and Jaideep Ammiraju, 9, from Redhill (Level 10).
International winner Joana Alencherry, 12, from Dublin, Ireland, took the top spot at Level 11.
Glasgow-based BYITC is the UK’s largest provider of Abacus Maths classes and is the creator of the world’s first digital Abacus maths learning app.
The Olympiad continues to grow in popularity, with participants from across the globe and more than 100 winners since its launch.
