One of boxing’s premier talents provides the third defence of his WBC lightweight championship in a bout that is expected to serve as the chief support act for the WBC super-middleweight title eliminator between Edgar Berlanga and Britain’s Hamzah Sheeraz on The Ring III card at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
It is Stevenson’s second outing of 2025, following on from his stoppage win over brave but vastly overmatched late replacement opponent – and part-time electrician from Yorkshire – Josh Padley on the undercard of the rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol in Riyadh in February.
He had originally been due to face Floyd Schofield Jr, who was removed from the fight after being hospitalised during the build-up.
Stevenson’s first successful defence as world champion in a third different weight class had come when he outpointed German Artem Harutyunyan last summer, having originally claimed the vacant WBC belt at 135 pounds by defeating Edwin De Los Santos in November 2023 and later seen a fight against Joe Cordina cancelled due to injury.
Now he finally battles Zepeda, the Mexican southpaw who is also undefeated and coming off the back of two decision wins over Tevin Farmer to retain his status as the WBC’s mandatory lightweight challenger.
It will be a first world title fight for Zepeda, who also has victories over the likes of Giovanni Cabrera and Maxi Hughes to his name in recent years.

Stevenson vs Zepeda prediction
Stevenson is an absolute master of his craft, a highly-skilled ring technician with a supreme boxing IQ who is simply one of the biggest talents on the planet.
However, he is not always the most popular watch with fight fans amid complaints that his established – hugely effective – style never makes for particularly absorbing contests.

He typically dominates far less talented opponents, avoids getting hit and eases to wide points wins, though does have stoppages against Padley, Shuichiro Yoshino and Jamel Herring on his unblemished 23-0 record in recent years.
We expect this to be another comfortable night for Stevenson lacking fireworks in which he is rarely troubled en route to taking a straightforward victory on the cards.
