The materials, including corrugated roofing, were spotted in Sainsbury’s car park, in Finchley Road, on April 29. They were still there on Tuesday (May 6).
Meagan Edwards, who lives with her partner Karl McKillop, reported the fly-tip to Sainsbury’s on April 30 and to Barnet Council on May 2, but says she has received no response.
Sainsbury’s says it has since covered the materials and arranged for their collection.
Meagan, 31, whose home overlooks the car park, her boyfriend, a chartered engineer, recognised that it contains asbestos, a material once common in buildings but which can cause deadly diseases if it degrades and is breathed in.
She added: “The day after I reported it to Barnet Council somebody came to fly tip more stuff in the middle of the day so now there’s more of it.
“The reason they fly tip is because it costs them money to get their material removed.”
The make-up artist said the car park, which had not been closed or cordoned off, is next to homes in West Heath Drive and the Golderslea flats—raising further concerns about exposure.
She said: “It’s really worrying as asbestos gets carried in the wind so it blows into people’s properties.
“A guy was practising riding his motorcycle and his mum was just standing there. They obviously didn’t know.”
Barnet Council said an online report was received on May 2 just before 3pm, when services had finished for the day, and its street cleansing service saw the report on May 7 but did not contact the Health & Safety Executive, which enforces asbestos regulations.
A council spokesperson said: “As is our policy if the fly tip is on private property, it is for the property owner or manager to deal with it.”
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “The safety of our colleagues and customers is our highest priority.
“We have reported fly-tipping incidents at our Golders Green store to the local council and police.
“The materials have been covered, the area cordoned off and we are arranging for our contractor to remove the items as soon as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
