3Food4U, a charity community hub that provides essentials to those in need says that its community centre on Highbridge Street has been destroyed by the crash on Saturday (December 20) at 1am.
According to the foodbank, the car went across the roundabout and breached the iron barrier, crashing directly into its shopfront.
It said: “The impact caused substantial damage to the ground-floor shop frontage. Thankfully, the building was empty at the time and no one was injured.”
Due to the damage, all services from this location are suspended until further notice while assessment and repairs take place.
The service would normally be a vital element to many people in need during the time of Christmas festivities.
Pesh Kapasiawala chair of trustees, said: “We are extremely grateful that no one was hurt. However, the damage to our Community Centre is significant.
“This hub provides judgement-free food support without referrals, offering dignity and immediate help to those who need it.
“We are now appealing for support to help us refurbish the building and secure an alternative space so our vital services can continue.”
